Full disclosure: I own Right Line Trading. We sell ready-made NinjaTrader 8 systems, which is option 4 below. Options 1 through 3 are built into NinjaTrader and cost nothing extra. NinjaTrader facts are from ninjatrader.com and its help guide as of September 29, 2026.

Before I owned a trading company I spent about 25 years programming robots and machine lines for automotive and building-products plants. Automating a trade in NinjaTrader 8 is the same job in miniature: you define inputs, rules and outputs, then you test it until it does what you expect. There are four ways to do it, and the right one depends on whether you’d rather spend time or money.

The short version: use ATM strategies to automate your exits, Strategy Builder to automate entries and exits without code, NinjaScript if you can write C#, or a ready-made system if you want it built, installed and supported for you.

The four ways compared

Method What it automates Coding? Backtestable? Cost Best for
1. ATM strategies Stops, targets, breakeven and trailing rules after you enter manually No No (real-time only) Included Discretionary traders who want consistent exits
2. Strategy Builder Entries and exits from point-and-click conditions (indicators, price, time) No Yes, in Strategy Analyzer Included Traders with clear rules who don’t code
3. NinjaScript (C#) Anything: custom logic, multiple instruments, custom order handling Yes (C#) Yes Included (your time, or a developer’s fee) Programmers and complex strategies
4. Ready-made system (e.g. our AI AutoTrader) Complete strategies, installed and configured for you No Depends on vendor; ours runs live on YouTube daily From about $197/mo to a $3,999 one-time license Traders who want results without building

What NinjaTrader charges

As of September 29, 2026, NinjaTrader lists three plans: Free ($0/mo), Monthly ($99/mo) and Lifetime ($1,499 one-time, or 4 payments of $499). The difference is commissions: $1.29 per side on standard contracts on Free, $0.99 on Monthly and $0.59 on Lifetime, with micros cheaper on each. The pricing page does not list a separate charge for automated execution. Check with NinjaTrader directly on which plans allow live automated strategies, because their support forum has historically said the free edition was limited.

Method 1: ATM strategies (automate your exits)

An ATM strategy is an order-management template. You enter the trade yourself, and NinjaTrader places your stop and target, moves the stop to breakeven, trails it, or scales out, all according to rules you set once. It is the fastest win for a discretionary trader, because most account damage comes from hesitating on exits. Limits: ATMs work in real time only, they can’t be backtested, and they don’t decide when to enter.

Method 2: Strategy Builder (no code)

Strategy Builder is a wizard inside the NinjaScript Editor. You pick conditions (“EMA(9) crosses above EMA(21)”, “time is after 9:45”), choose actions (buy, sell, set a stop) and NinjaTrader generates the strategy for you. You can then test it in Strategy Analyzer against historical data and, once you’re satisfied, run it in full automation on a sim or live account. If you outgrow the wizard, the generated code can be unlocked and edited by hand.

Watch out for: over-optimizing on past data. A strategy that looks perfect in a backtest often falls apart live. Forward-test in sim for a few weeks before risking money.

Method 3: NinjaScript (C#)

NinjaScript is NinjaTrader’s C#-based framework. Anything Strategy Builder can do, NinjaScript can do, plus multi-instrument logic, custom order routing, data from outside sources and connections to other software. This is what our own systems are built in. If you don’t code, you can hire a NinjaScript developer; expect to pay by the project and to own the testing yourself.

Method 4: Buy a ready-made system

If you’d rather trade than build, a ready-made system gives you strategies that are already written, tested and supported. On NinjaTrader 8 the main options are our AI AutoTrader, QuantVue, NinjaBot AI, TradePilot AI and AutoFuturesTrader; I compared all of them in Best NinjaTrader 8 Automated Trading Systems. What I’d look for in any of them: assisted installation, a live demonstration you can watch, clearly stated refund terms, and a community that shares settings. Ours adds the Community Best Bot, which auto-follows the top strategy on our member leaderboard.

Checklist before you go live

  • Run any strategy on a sim account for at least a few weeks.
  • Use a VPS or a dedicated PC that stays on during market hours; a laptop that sleeps will miss exits.
  • Set a daily loss limit at the account or ATM level, separate from the strategy.
  • If you trade a prop firm account, read its automation rules first.
  • Keep a trade journal so you can tell a bad strategy from a bad week.

Frequently asked questions

Can you automate trading in NinjaTrader 8 without coding?

Yes. ATM strategies automate exits with no code, and Strategy Builder lets you create full entry-and-exit strategies with point-and-click conditions. Ready-made systems such as the AI AutoTrader are installed for you.

Is NinjaTrader automated trading free?

NinjaTrader has a free plan ($0/mo) with higher commissions, a $99/mo plan and a $1,499 lifetime license. The pricing page does not list a separate fee for automation, but confirm with NinjaTrader which plans allow live automated strategies.

What is the difference between an ATM strategy and a NinjaScript strategy?

An ATM strategy manages exits (stops, targets, trailing) after you enter manually and runs in real time only. A NinjaScript strategy, whether built in Strategy Builder or coded in C#, decides entries and exits itself and can be backtested.

What language does NinjaTrader 8 use?

NinjaScript, which is based on C#. Strategy Builder generates NinjaScript code for you without typing any.
